MISSION AND HISTORY

Who We Are:

The Fire Place SHG is a youth lead, youth managed, non political , non religious organization started in September 2018 and registered in 2019 in Kenya under the department of Social Services . We have a team of  ten dedicated individuals running our affairs plus a team of volunteers from across the world. We are headquartered in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County- Kenya.

Why:

As a youth centered organization, we envision an informed empowered action oriented African youth.

'Everything rises and falls on leadership,' Dr. Maxwell. We believe strongly that leadership in Africa like every where else in the world determines priorities, policy,  allocation of resources and this directly affect the kind of lives every single person lives. Many African countries are embracing democracy where the people have an opportunity to choose the leaders they want. To make this critical decision, the people must have access to information that contributes to a more informed decision. The Fire Place seeks to influence leadership and governance in Africa through access to information, economic empowerment and civic action of the youth.

We focus on the youth for various reasons.

1. Our converging medium of influence is technology and specifically social media. Kenya is among the leading countries in internet penetration (89.8%) and majority online subscribers in Africa  being young people.

2. The youth and  political apathy in Africa is a direct threat to democracy and stability of the African Continent

3. The youth are the majority in Africa. About 41% of the people in the continent are below 15 years old while another 19% are youth between 15 and 24 years old. There can hardly be a progressive continent without adequate representation of this critical demography on the table to influence programs policy and resource allocation among other things.

We therefore believe that for Africa to walk confidently into the future , we must have more young people in the decision making and African political space.

How we do It:

We Talk- We facilitate conversations which we broadcast online through our social media platforms, local radio and television stations and grass root organized dialogues themed on current affairs, persistent community challenges, or localize national conversation seeking the people opinion but also urging citizens to act to improve the situation.

We Act - We engage in activities geared towards change. Environmental conservation, lobby for youth responsive planning and budgeting, Advocacy of accountability from government, community leaders and every citizen, mobilize and organize community groups in pursuit of their development agenda among other civic engagement acts. We network, we collaborate, we create synergies to influence

We Change-We highlight and share our initiatives and others that effect change in our communities to inspire others.
